QUESTIONS

1. Do I need a doctor’s referral to attend physiotherapy?

You don’t! In BC physiotherapists are considered primary healthcare workers, so we can be accessed without a doctor’s referral. That said, you may require a doctor’s referral in order to be reimbursed for your sessions by your insurance company.

2. What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy means anything to do with the pelvis: urinary incontinence, pain with sex, pelvic floor and core strength, changes with menopause, prolapse, pregnancy and postpartum changes.... the list goes on! This CAN include an internal exam but does not have to.

3. What do I need to bring or wear?

This depends on the body part we will be working on. If it is your shoulder or upper back please wear/bring a tank top. If it is your hip/knee/ankle please wear or bring shorts. If it is your neck, please wear something that allows access to that area (turtlenecks and hoodies aren’t great). If you are a runner and are having issues in this area, bring your runners.

If you printed off your intake form to fill out by hand, bring this with you.

Also bring a notebook or your phone to jot down some information from the session.

4. What will the first session be like?

If you haven’t had a chance to fill out your online intake form, we will go through this first. Then I will ask you several questions to establish what your concern is and what your goals are. This will be followed by a thorough examination, discussion, goal setting, and education and potentially home exercises and/or hands on treatment.

Physiotherapy
5. How many sessions will I need?

This totally depends on what your concern is and what your goals are. I have had patients that I only see one time, and patients that I have seen on and off for years. Your treatment plan will be geared to your specific needs and goals.

6. Do you charge extra for acupuncture or taping?

7. Is there a charge for missed appointments?

8. Do you take extended medical insurance?

We do not take extended medical insurance. It is very easy to submit claims for physiotherapy treatment via apps or online for most extended health providers.

9. Do you take ICBC or WorkSafe claims?

No, we do not work with ICBC or WorkSafe. However if you choose to, and have arranged with your adjustor, our services could be covered by these organizations. It is up to you to organize this.

10. Do you have laser, shockwave, or ultrasound?

No, I do not work with any modalities. I have found both in the research and in clinic that patients who take a pro-active approach to healing via exercise and lifestyle change, guided by a physiotherapist do very well. More importantly they learn how to best take care of their bodies going forward and end up feeling more empowered and confident. If I feel you need laser, shockwave, ultrasound, or anything else, I will not hesitate to refer you to a practitioner that offers these services.
